About Vilamoura
There are 5 golf courses only minutes away along with the Vilamoura Marina with its many bars and restaurants a 5 minutes drive and around 5/6 Euros in a taxi. A taxi can be arranged if required to pick you up from Faro airport, the fare will typically be less than an airport taxi. Please contact me if this is required. If you intend to explore the area a bit more a car is recommenced.
The marina is flanked on both sides by award winning beaches for you to relax and take in the wonderful Algarve sunshine. This really is a special place, a unique leisure and recreation resort community where the pace of life is so easy it feels like summer all year round. Designed from the start to be self-sufficient, Vilamoura is ideally located and is bursting with sporting and leisure facilities for the whole family. It is a place for rest and relaxation but also for pursuing active pastimes and sports, a friendly and safe residential haven, but also a vibrant and exciting night-life centre. It is Portuguese, but also truly cosmopolitan. Away from the hectic pace and the stress of the modern world, all who visit are revitalized by the lifestyle, the convenience and the hospitality of this truly special place.
Situated less than thirty minutes from Faro airport it is within easy reach for visitors from all over the world. Amongst the many attractions and facilities there are six different Golf Courses, a large Marina, a Lawn Bowling Club with two grass Rinks, a Tennis Centre, a Sports Club, Night Clubs, an International Casino with glamorous shows, a Cinema, and an excellent Riding School. Within the centre of Vilamoura there is a preserved Roman Site and Museum of Cerro da Vila providing an interesting glimpse into the past of the area. In Roman times this location was important in producing a fish paste known as "garum". The ruins also include the baths in which the mariners used to bathe. As a location specifically designed for tourism it has proved to be a very successful holiday destination for all ages due to the variety of facilities that it provides holidaymakers.
There are numerous bars and restaurants within the town itself but also in the nearby fishing town of Quarteira all offering a wide and varied mixture depending on your taste and budget, that said eating out is not expensive and all prices are on display outside all restaurants. There are also numerous bars and restaurants along the N125 road that stretches the length of the Algarve. For those with a car (or indeed if you take a short taxi ride) it is recommended you try to visit the local Portuguese restaurants and bars where the food is equally as enjoyable and varied as the marina and town but will cost less, and the people are warm and friendly and welcome tourists and families. Depending on your taste I will be happy to offer my recommendations on some of my favorites depending on your personal preference.
There is ample shopping available in the area but again it is worth venturing out if you have the opportunity for even more variety. Just 15 minutes down the N125 there is a large shopping centre at Ghia which has the Continente supermarket (Portuguese equivalent to Tesco/Asda I guess) which is ideal to stock up with food and drink for your stay and better value than the small tourist supermarkets. Just a further 10 minutes or so down the road is a brand new shopping mall in Portimao which boats over 130 shops including a large food court. There is even a Primark which for anyone with teenage girls is almost a pilgrimage I believe.
The above is just a quick guide and if anyone has any questions on eating, drinking, shopping, car hire suggestions etc etc please feel free to ask.
